A great place to see Moose: Fishercap Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana
Fishercap Lake in Glacier National Park is a serene lake located in the Many Glacier area in Montana.
Most people probably visit Fishercap Lake on their way to Red Rock Falls. While it is not visible from the trail to Red Rock Falls, it is a gorgeous lake that you do not want to miss!
The best time to visit Fishercap Lake is either during your hike to Red Rock Falls, or in the early morning (5am) or evening when the moose are around. There is a family of moose that always seem to be in and out of here early and late in the day. This is one of the best places in Glacier National Park to see moose. I cannot recommend stopping by this lake enough!
There is a nice beach area with a trail leading you around the lake. The mountains surrounding the lake leading up into the Swiftcurrent Valley will take your breath away.
To get here, you will drive into the Many Glacier area until the road ends and park near the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn. You take the Swiftcurrent Pass Hiking Trail to get to Fishercap Lake; you begin at the far end of the parking lot.
While the sign tells you the hike is 0.7 miles one way, I don’t believe it. It took us about 10 minutes each way, and that was letting a toddler walk on her alongside us. It is so quick, I don’t really consider it a “hike.” It is flat and beautiful, crossing over a creek and through the trees. Then there is the “funny tree” that makes the perfect photo opportunity.
This is a great place to stop on one of the longer hikes this direction, or just come here for a picnic lunch or to look for moose. It is too bad you can’t camp here, but you can camp at nearby Many Glacier (if you are able to get a spot).
Be sure to stop and enjoy Fishercap Lake if you make it to this part of Glacier National Park.
