Our Montana Wedding

I have recently discovered that a lot of people who live out-of-state choose Montana as their site for their destination wedding.

Montana is truly a special place.  Whether you want a wedding on a farm, in the mountains, on a ski hill, next to a lake….there are so many options! And no matter what you choose, they are sure to be beautiful.  Montana has wonderful choices of photographers, locations, food, florists, you name it!

I wanted to share a bit about our wedding {at a family cabin at an undisclosed location ;)} in Montana.

My husband and I wanted a small wedding, for many reasons that maybe no one will understand.  We invited only a few immediate family members, and we got married very shortly after we got engaged.  So, we didn’t have much time to plan anyway.  This year will be our third wedding anniversary.

We hit the dirt road, and disappeared into the mountains to vow to live happily ever after.

We kept everything simple.  We ordered easy food, and an easy cake, and brought it with us.  We rode a 4 wheeler into the mountains the day before our wedding, and picked a bouquet of wildflowers for me to hold.  There really is nothing more romantic than picking flowers from a mountainside with the man of your dreams.

Our family traveled to attend the wedding — including my (at the time) 92-year-old great-grandmother.  Yes, she is amazing.  Raised on the prairies in eastern Montana, she is up for anything.

Some family members camped on the property, while others stayed at a nearby hotel. (Just how “nearby” the hotel is, depends on how you define “nearby.”)

Did I mention we did not hire a professional photographer?  Although I do not recommend doing this, it worked out for us.  I would highly suggest having someone who is paid and is in charge of photos taking the photos of the day you want to remember for the rest of your life.  We just didn’t feel we needed one.  It worked out for us.  Several family members followed us around snapping photos, and I have to say, thanks to friends and family, we got some of the most beautiful wedding photos I could have ever paid anyone to take.

We threw out lawn chairs for people to sit on during the ten minute ceremony.  We even created an “aisle” between the lawn chairs.  Then the lawn chairs were moved to the fire pit for the “reception.”

It was beautiful, and simple….just like I wanted.  I hope if you get married in Montana, you get the wedding of your dreams, whether it be a large or small wedding, fancy or simple.  It is the love between the two of you that makes it the day that it is.

I really can’t think of many more magical places than Montana to get married.  And to live happily ever after. 😉

Warmest Wishes from Big Sky Country,

Alex Neill
