Alpine Horn at Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park, Montana
We were lucky to catch Paul Watson playing his alpine horn on the beach at Apgar at Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park. Taken by surprise, we went down to the beach to enjoy the alpenglow and he happened to be on the beach playing this beautiful instrument.
Have you heard an alpine horn before? I had never even heard of such a thing. What an incredible sound. Also known as the alphorn, or alpenhorn, this wooden horn and similar horns have been used for communication throughout the mountains of Europe.
The music flows from this long horn in the silence of the evening and echoes through the hillsides over at the Fish Creek campground. What a beautiful sound, particularly in this mountainous setting.
Although you may get lucky to see him any night of the week during the summer months at Lake McDonald, he says he tries to go on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. (We saw him on a Saturday night though – go figure!)
In case you don’t get the chance to listen to Paul play himself, you can listen to the YouTube videos below to hear the Alpine Horn in Glacier National Park.
Warm Wishes from big sky country,
