Echo Lake Cafe: An Amazing Breakfast in the West
The Echo Lake Cafe is quite famous among locals. Located just outside Bigfork, Montana, the café features breakfast and lunch … and I love their breakfast. This café is the kind of place that people just rave about, where locals drive across the Flathead Valley to partake in the goodness. If you are a breakfast person, this is the place for you.
We headed to the café recently on a sunny Saturday. I love sitting at breakfast with warm sunshine flowing through the windows, sipping tea. You can conveniently flip over a high chair to set your infant car seat on while you eat, also. (Although I didn’t do that on this trip, I just set her in a corner on the ground in her car seat.) Our baby promptly woke up and joined us on my lap for breakfast.
The Echo Lake Cafe is a fun, small, delicious café that often has a line waiting out the door. Thankfully there is a comfortable waiting area. And it is worth the wait. I figure any restaurant that is that popular, has a good reason for it.
I personally love the feel of the cafe. To your left as you enter, is a sunny room filled with windows and large tables. There is also a coffee bar to cozy up to. To the right there is lots of seating available to enjoy a meal.
I think a lot of the charm to the restaurant is its home-town feel. It is a place where locals frequent, where you can catch up with your neighbor over a cup of coffee. If we lived closer, I would absolutely come here more often.
And of course, the food. The food that I am willing to drive several miles for. If you want a pancake the size of your head, try their huge, fluffy cakes. So good, yet so huge. One is big enough for a few people to share.
I should have put my hand in this picture so that there is a comparison. You can see the items on the table, and how much smaller they are than the pancake. I need to work on getting my pancakes as good as these.
Our server informed us that their house made hollandaise sauce is to die for. I haven’t tried it, but I plan to on a future trip. (If you try it, let me know how it is!)
We had the Smoked Salmon Omelette, with a patty sausage on the side. The patty sausage was good, and was very large. The café smokes their own salmon, and we enjoyed the omelette. I think I will try the huevos rancheros next time.
The day we went, we went a little later in the day, around noon, so there was no line. It was still packed, but we did not have to wait. We caught up with some friends who live closer to the café than us.
One of the best things about this place: They serve breakfast ALL DAY. Yum. By the time you get going with a child in tow, it never seems to be in time to get the breakfast menu at restaurants, so I am very thankful for places like this.
You can see their full menu here.
If you enter the Flathead Valley from the Swan Valley, or are near Bigfork, you should swing in for breakfast or lunch. Have a chat with your server about the history of the place, and of the area.
