Exploring Your Own Backyard

The Rocky Mountains in the Flathead Valley, Montana, Copyright Montana Vacation Blog 2014

The greatest lesson I have learned from this blog is how important it is to explore your own backyard.

I used to spend hours planning trips and dreaming of years spent abroad. (I did in fact spend many years abroad). I too often overlooked the beauty that I had in my own backyard.  I always felt the need to get away and explore new, foreign places.  I believed that was where the excitement was, and I laughed at the idea of stay-cations.

Now my line of thinking has completely changed. (Having small children has also helped me embrace the beauty of home).  Now I am constantly searching for places I can go closer to home to expand my knowledge and experience all that Montana has to offer.

Of course, I live in Whitefish, Montana. So my “backyard” consists of places like Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake. For that, I am lucky. But I still managed to take it for granted for a long time.  I think we may all be guilty at times of forgetting that our own backyard may have more to offer.  A new park, a new street, a new lake, a new museum…the possibilities are endless no matter where you live.

For my readers in Montana, don’t forget the beauty that is right outside waiting for you.  You can never run out of new things and places to explore.

I hope that you, too, will get out and explore what your own backyard has to offer. Oh.  And visit Montana.

Warm Wishes from Big Sky Country,

Alex M. Neill
