Touring Flathead Lake and Wildhorse Island with Explore Flathead Lake

The owner of Explore Flathead Lake, Dalon, was nice enough to take me on a tour of Flathead Lake and Wildhorse Island with my friend Jeni. It took us a bit of time to line it up, but we were able to go on a tour one evening in late September.

Dalon is probably one of the nicest guys on the planet. He is an encyclopedia about Flathead Lake – full of knowledge and fun facts about the lakes, the homes, and the islands. The wonderful part of his tours is how flexible he is. He will take you around the lake, out to Wildhorse Island, or just float all day on the water with you! I can’t help but think this would be the perfect idea for a birthday or bachelor/ette party!

Dalon toured us around the islands near Wildhorse Island, and took us out to the middle of the lake for views into Glacier National Park and south into the Mission Mountains.

There was hardly a soul on the the lake that evening, and the water was glass. It looked so perfect, it was so tempting to jump into the lake! Unfortunately it was too cold by September for us to be able to swim.

My favorite part of our trip with him was getting to go to Wildhorse Island. He was kind enough to join us on the hike up to the homesteads, where we immediately spotted all six of the wild horses that live here. A short walk down the trail took us to the perfect viewpoint to sit and enjoy the horses. Listening to them “neigh” in the late summer light was incredible. How free they are living at peace on this island!

The horses are actually harder to find than you would think – I guess that they are often not seen even if you hike the entire island! I hope that you get to see them when you visit; it truly is a treat. Even if you don’t see the horses, there are other wildlife on the island, including deer and Big Horn Sheep.

I was afraid we wouldn’t get a pink sunset on this evening because there was a lot of cloud cover, but we lucked out as we were leaving the island and the sky lit up.

This was an evening to remember!

Dalon picks up people for tours at Big Arm State Park or in Polson. You can contact him if you need to arrange pickup at another location. Big Arm State Park is a wonderful spot with a lot of parking and does not seem to get crowded.

Dalon also offers photoshoots with his tours — where he will take nice photos of you while you enjoy your trip. I love this idea because it allows you to relax on the boat while he handles the memories! And he takes beautiful photos!

You can book a tour with Dalon at http://www.exploreflatheadlake.com/.

I cannot recommend a trip with Dalon enough! He will accommodate any trip! An affordable way to see Flathead Lake, or visit Wildhorse Island.

Do yourself a favor and book a trip with Dalon and Explore Flathead Lake today!

Warm Wishes from Big Sky Country,

Alex M. Neill
