Hiking to Bullhead Lake, Many Glacier, Glacier National Park, Montana
Beautiful Bullhead Lake is a stunning hike that takes you through the Swiftcurrent Valley near Many Glacier in Glacier National Park. This is a great hike for families looking to do something a bit longer than a lot of the other hikes around here.
I found this hike to be quite enjoyable. Glacier National Park has the site listed as just under 4 miles one-way, making this an 8-mile round-trip hike. I have seen other websites list it as just over 7 miles round-trip. Either way, the elevation gain is pretty minimal (under 500 feet), and with the scenery, you won’t notice the length.
If you love mountain lakes, this is a hike you will enjoy. You will pass Fishercap Lake, Red Rock Lake, Red Rock Falls, and then arrive at Bullhead Lake. All of the lakes you pass have incredible surrounding mountains, and these small lakes offer gorgeous reflections of the surrounding valley. I literally could not get enough of the waterfalls, mountains, and views!
Redrock Falls is a large, cascading waterfall that you also get the pleasure of walking by. After you pass the initial turn down to the waterfall, you will head up the hill and see the top of the falls. Here I crossed the creek in my bare feet and crawled up the rocks to sit at the top of this waterfall. This is a fantastic place to jump in — we saw several people do it the day we were there. I determined that it wasn’t the best idea, considering that we still had 6 more miles of hiking to go, and I didn’t want my shoes to be soaked.
Of course when we reached Bullhead Lake, both of my kids had fallen asleep so we didn’t stop for long. We turned and headed back. There doesn’t seem to be a beach that is easily reached from the trail from what we could see. There are some trails leading down to the lake over some rocks, but are not great for small children.
We saw deer at Bullhead Lake and Red Rock Lake, but we heard there had been a moose at Bullhead Lake earlier that day, and a Grizzly Bear on the trail the day before.
The trailhead begins at the far end of the parking area near the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn in Many Glacier. Follow the signs for the Swiftcurrent Pass trailhead. You will pass this lake if you are hiking to Swiftcurrent Pass.
The hike to Bullhead Lake is truly an enjoyable hike for the entire family! For not much elevation gain, you get stunning scenery, and very few people once you pass Redrock Falls. If you are looking for more scenery and a longer hike, I recommend continuing past the falls to the lake.
