There are not enough words to give Many Glacier in Glacier National Park the credit it deserves.

Towering peaks, open valleys, turquoise lakes …. a magical place that appears just outside of Babb, Montana.  It is in the middle of nowhere, but its beauty will surprise you.  I felt like I was in Switzerland (which, by the way, I have never visited — but I assume this is what it would be like).

Many Glacier is one of the most sought after places to visit while in Glacier National Park, and for good reason.

I don’t even know how to describe how I felt after visiting Many Glacier this last time.  We were only there for a day, and I felt like I had been on vacation for a week.  It is like entering another world, and then returning to civilization when you leave.  It will leave you in a wonderful daze.

You will drive 8 miles north of St. Mary on the east side of Glacier National Park, and then take a left hand turn from Babb to Many Glacier.  You will see a sign that says, “Many Glacier,” and you will take that turn on your left.

Then the road takes you 12 miles from the turn to Many Glacier.  This road is paved, with a few short sections of gravel, but is fairly rough.  A lot of dips and rough spots.  Enough to wake a sleeping baby — I know from experience!

The entire drive from St. Mary you will see the towering peaks approaching on the left, and then you will reach them on the drive from Babb to Many Glacier.  You will drive around a large, beautiful blue lake on both sections of the drive.

You can turn into the hotel area upon arrival, or you can continue straight to a parking area to reach the trail heads.

Parking is up behind the Many Glacier hotel, just continue up and around past the check-in area.  Behind the parking lot is where the trail rides begin.

Many Glacier is a haven for hiking.  Trails take off into the valleys and hillsides, providing options for any level of hiker.  There are also boat tours available from the Glacier Park Boat Company (for a fee).

The Many Glacier Hotel is something out of a movie, and has been designated a National Historic Landmark.  Its size and demeanor make you feel like you are in the Swiss Alps, as it sits right on Swiftcurrent Lake, surrounded by jagged, spectacular peaks.  It has a deck and private decks to the guest rooms facing the lake.

To enjoy a cocktail while lounging on the chairs provided by the Many Glacier Hotel, with the sun on your face, is to live the good life.

Or you can sit inside out of the hot sun (or rain, just in case), and relax on the couches, or browse the gift shop.

Many Glacier is known to be bear country — so be careful no matter where you are in this area.

My husband and I each carried a can of bear spray no matter where we were, even near the hotel, and we saw the largest bear I have ever seen on the road just outside of Many Glacier.  I think they come down to the lakes for water, so keep your eyes peeled.  And bring binoculars so that you can see bears up on the surrounding hills, whether or not you go for a hike!

I will have another post soon about staying at the Many Glacier Hotel, stay tuned!

Don’t miss a trip to Many Glacier on your trip to northwest Montana and Glacier National Park.

Warm Wishes from Big Sky Country,

Alex Neill
