Our Lady of the Rockies, The Statue On the Mountains Overlooking Butte, Montana
“Our Lady of the Rockies”, a 90 ft. statue, sitting atop the Continental Divide overlooking Butte, Montana, is the result of a dream and six years of work. Countless volunteers completed a seemingly impossible task, on Dec. 20, 1985. The base is 3,500 ft. above the city and 8,510 ft. above sea level. The statue, lighted and visible at night, is a spectacular sight to behold.
Since the start of the project in 1979, people in all walks of life and religion worked to pave the way for the statue. It is entirely nondenominational and was dedicated to women everywhere, especially mothers. Volunteers spent many hours blasting a road to the top of the Rockies, sometimes making only 10 ft. of progress a day.
The base of the statue was poured with 400 tons of concrete in September of 1985. On December 17, 1985, a Nevada Air National Guard team lifted the statue in four sections with a Ch-54 Sikorsky Sky Crane. While thousands watched, the final head section was placed atop the statue on December 20, 1985.
Today there are bus tours that take you up to Our Lady of the Rockies from June through October (weather permitting) and the spectacular sight can be witnessed by all. There is a gift shop in the Butte Plaza Mall (at 3100 Harrison Avenue) and a video is shown where one can realize the incredible story on screen.
After 29 yrs. looking over the city, Our Lady is still maintained and cared for by the original volunteers. We are hopeful that this upcoming generation will help to preserve this incredible monument by becoming involved in volunteering their time and energy and becoming passionate about the “miracles” that continue to happen at our statue and will for generations to come.
