Parking at Logan Pass in Glacier National Park, Montana
Logan Pass is one of the most beautiful places in Glacier National Park, especially because you reach it by driving up the Going-to-the-Sun Highway. It is truly amazing that you can drive right up to such a beautiful place on earth.
But let me tell you: parking at Logan Pass can be a nightmare. This is particularly true in the middle of the day.
The parking lot at the top of the pass is quite small. Which is no wonder ~ they are trying to make space at the top of a major pass in the middle of Glacier National Park for several cars to be able to park. For the millions of visitors that there are to Glacier National Park each year, the parking lot is just unfortunately not big enough to fit all the visitors it needs to.
If you try to park at the pass in mornings or evenings, you should have no problem. Lots of empty parking spaces.
But the middle of the day seems to be prime time for travelers. You will most likely end up having to do laps around the parking lot, waiting for a spot to open up. The park will place signs out at the edge of the parking lot stating “Lot Full.” Well, this is of no help! There is no where else to park at the top of Logan Pass. So you either wait, or you keep driving… and the next stop besides to hike is a long drive.
My recommendation? Visit the top of the pass either earlier in the morning, or later in the evening. (You will have a better chance of seeing animals during these times as well.)
If you end up at the pass in the middle of the day and it is crowded, break out the eagle eye and watch for people walking to their vehicles to leave so that you can have their spot. (I always end up doing laps, and the person behind me gets the next open spot!) If you wait long enough, you will eventually get a spot.
Logan Pass is incredible, don’t let the parking problem ruin your day.
