Stillwater Fish House in Whitefish, Montana
The Stillwater Fish House is a wonderful place to visit for a meal during your stay in Whitefish, Montana. Located 3 miles north of Whitefish heading towards Eureka on Highway 93, on the left side of the highway.
I had heard rave reviews for this restaurant before visiting. It is easy to miss because it is not in downtown Whitefish, and I believe that most visitors stick to restaurants closer to Whitefish. (This is not far out of Whitefish, but if you don’t know it is there, you will easily miss it during your vacation.) There have been a few restaurants that have tried to make at this location before the Stillwater Fish House, and have all since closed.
As soon as we entered, we were greeted by a tall, very friendly man. It was hard to tell if the restaurant was open, so I ran up the steps to check first because I didn’t want to take our sleeping baby out of the car if we didn’t have to! There are several steps leading up to the main entrance, but don’t let it deter you in winter. I was afraid that the steps would be slick if they wood, but they are metal with good grips, so you don’t have to worry much about falling. (You should still hang onto the railing though during the winter! There is ice everywhere!)
The gentleman sat us and then our server came over. There was a small amount of Christmas decor, as we visited right before Christmas 2012. I also loved the retro-style cushion coverings for the booths. There are plenty of tables, and each table is covered in brown removable paper, which I am assuming children can color on. We did not try to color on it. There is also a large deck with tables for dinner outside during the summer. We did not sit outside, because we visited during winter, but with the wooded setting, it would be a lovely place for a dinner during the warmer months.
At a later point, the same gentleman who had sat us at our table returned and informed us that he was the owner, named Jesse. He was extremely nice, continued to check on our table, and made sure that we were doing okay, that the food was good, and even asked if we needed help with our baby. (Our baby of course attempted to pull all the plates and things off the table, including the thick paper that covers each table.)
We ordered the Fresh Ahi Poke as an appetizer, which is Tuna tossed with soy, citrus, ginger and herbs and served with wontons. We also had the Seafood Chowder, which was so good! Lots of flavor. Please excuse the picture below, as we began eating before I could grab a picture, so this is a half-eaten appetizer.
For dinner we had the Miso Butterfish and the Thai Seafood Curry. The Butterfish itself was a typical white fish that didn’t have a lot of flavor, but their miso/sake reduction and edamame salad on top of the fish made the fish by adding just the right flavor. The Thai Seafood Curry was spicy, and one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. Our server informed us that they won the Taste of Whitefish with this dish. (I am by no means a food critic, I just know what we like!)
They have a range of wine and beer, as well as non-alcoholic beverages. We had heard so many good things before coming here. If you are looking for good seafood, and are looking for $10-$30 per dish, I would absolutely recommend visiting this place!
