Stumptown Station: A great place for lunch in Whitefish, Montana
Stumptown Station is a great place for lunch on your way through Whitefish, Montana, before you head up to Whitefish Mountain Resort.
I find that this great little deli is easy to miss! I had not eaten lunch here until recently. Their address is 115 Central Avenue, right on the main street in Whitefish, in between Cooper’s Eatery and the Red Caboose Frozen Yogurt. Stumptown Station is actually owned by the same person as Cooper’s Eatery. Look for the sign out front with specials.
We stopped into the Stumptown Station Deli to grab a few pasties. Have you heard of a pasty? Here is how Wikipedia describes it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasty. I describe it is a baked pastry with various fillings of meat, vegetables, and spices, wrapped and enclosed in a pastry shell and baked. As Matt is from Butte, Montana, pasties hold a special place in his heart. Butte is known for its pasties, thanks to the mining history of the city and the miners eating pasties for lunch.
When we found out that the Stumptown Station Deli carried pasties, we were more than eager to try them. Much quicker than driving to Butte!! Stumptown Station makes them from scratch, starting with the pastry. And they are delicious. They have a selection of different fillings you can choose from.
We tried the “Pizza” pasty, and the “Traditional” pasty. The “Traditional” pasty was filled with potatoes, beef, onion, and carrot, and came with a delicious brown gravy to pour on the top. The “Pizza” pasty had pizza fillings with a tomato sauce topping. The “Pizza” pasty tasted strongly of tomatoes to me, so I would suggest liking tomatoes if you order that one. I love tomatoes. We thought both pasties were very good!
I would describe the idea of a pasty as being like that of a calzone, but way better. (Again, I cannot stress enough in my food blogs that I am not a food critic, I only let you know what I like! You may love something that I don’t, and vice versa.)
We heard from the chef that the “Chicken and Broccoli” pasty is the best — we will have to try it next time! (Let us know how it is if you try it!) They also have many other items on their menu to choose from. If you follow them on Facebook, they also list their specials frequently!
I also love the space that this restaurant has. It is a large eating area, with windows overlooking Central Avenue, making it bright and airy, and a nice place to eat. We struck up a conversation with the people sitting by us; very friendly visitors from Oregon!
We also took a piece of Red Velvet cake home — and, all I can say is — delicious. I did not want to share any with Matt, but I let him have a few bites. It tasted like a Red Velvet Cheesecake…let’s just say I could eat it every day!
Also, if you get a chance to talk to the owner, or the chefs in the back, everyone is extremely friendly! Ask them anything you want to know, and I am sure they will be more than happy to answer questions, whether your questions are about Stumptown Station Deli, or about Whitefish!
We hope you enjoy your stop at the Stumptown Station Deli in Whitefish as much as we did!
Warmest Wishes from Big Sky Country,
