Sun Canyon Lodge and Outfitting, Trip to the Chinese Wall in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Montana

A few weeks ago, I spent six days in the Bob Marshall Wilderness with Sun Canyon Lodge and Outfitting. Sun Canyon Lodge is located just west of Augusta, MT, on the eastern edge of the Bob Marshall Wilderness near the Gibson Reservoir.

Sun Canyon Lodge and Outfitting is owned and operated by Josh and Niki Carlbom, and provides Montana visitors with a wide variety of wilderness activities including backcountry hunts, lodge hunts, horseback vacations and backcountry fishing trips.

Our trip into the Bob was a six day horseback trip that was essentially an out and back loop to the iconic Chinese Wall. If you’re not familiar with the Chinese Wall, it’s the name given to a 1,000 ft tall limestone escarpment that extends for over 22 miles through the heart of the Bob. It’s really a sight to see in person.

Our trip started with a boat ride across Gibson Reservoir to cut down on the number of miles we’d need to ride on our first day. Once across the reservoir, we mounted up and rode a few hours into the Bob for our first night of camping.

For our group of six, Sun Canyon provided 2-3 guides/wranglers depending on the day, as well as a camp chef. Between the horses and pack mules, we had quite the train rolling through the Bob. This amount of gear, however, provided for an almost luxurious backcountry experience, especially if you’re like me and you’re used to backpacking.

The folks from Sun Canyon took care of pretty much everything, from camp setup and teardown, to packing, cooking, and everything in between. I almost…almost…felt bad sitting around the campfire doing whatever I felt like while my meals were cooked (the food was excellent by the way) and all of the work was done for me. Our biggest concern was to decide whether or not to go fishing.

Day two was a longer day of riding that brought us to our campsite within a few miles of Wall, since you are not allowed to camp near the Wall itself. On day three, we rode the last few miles up to the trail to the Wall itself. Even though our trip to the Wall was in July, the Wall area still had a fair amount of snow, so we dismounted and continued on foot. My understanding is that this level of snow is a bit unusual (but not unheard of) for July, but it didn’t stop us from hiking along the base of the wall for a few miles and taking in the scenery.

Days four through six were spent making our way back to Sun Canyon Lodge. We spent two nights at the Sun Canyon Cabin Creek camp, which is a semi-permanent camp located up the North Fork of the Sun River, about 16 miles into the Bob. Since it’s a semi-permanent camp, the camp is set up in late spring and taken down at the end of hunting season, and has heavy canvas wall tents with wood burning stoves and cots to sleep on. There’s also a cook tent, an outhouse and even a propane shower tent. If you’re into fishing, you can fish the nearby Sun River, which is about a mile walk from camp.

My trip into the Bob with Sun Canyon Lodge and Outfitting was very memorable. This trip was the first time I’ve ever gone into the backcountry with an outfitter, but it probably won’t be the last. Nothing will replace backpacking for me, but going in with an experienced outfitter makes for a nice change of pace, especially if you’re not into the physical aspect of backcountry backpacking.

If you’re looking for an outfitter for any wilderness activity in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, take a look at Sun Canyon Lodge and Outfitting. I think you’ll be glad you did.
