The Craggy Range Bar and Grill in Whitefish, Montana: The Place for a Burger, Live Music, and Fun Staff!

Ahh….the good ol’ Craggy Range Bar and Grill.  Or, the Crag as I fondly like to call it (as in like, rhymes with leg).  My “home away from home.”  I call it this because I worked there for…well, let’s just say quite some time prior to attending law school.

The Craggy Range Bar and Grill was opened in 2006 in downtown Whitefish, Montana.  I started working there right when it opened.  After a series of failed restaurants at this location over the years, I didn’t expect Craggy Range to survive longer than a couple of years.

But the restaurant began doing things that Whitefish was missing.

First, the Craggy Range has opened a patio.  The patio is wonderful in the summer.  An outdoor area out back holds several tables and picnic tables with umbrellas, with cool misters keeping you cooler in the hot weather.  There is also sometimes a band with live music playing during the summer.  I highly recommend eating lunch or dinner here during the wonderful Whitefish summer months.

Next, the Craggy Range has a nice bar area.  For awhile there, it seemed that downtown Whitefish was lacking a “nicer” bar area.  If you wanted to get a cocktail before the Craggy Range opened, you had to go sit in an actual bar such as the Great Northern or the Remington.  The Craggy Range has two bars, one up front, and one in the back.

The back bar hosts live music often on the weekends and has a big screen for watching games on during football season.  The back bar is not always open.  It is generally open during the summer and when there is live music playing.  The front bar is always open, and is a nice atmosphere with flat screen televisions to watch games on.  It overlooks the main street in Whitefish, so it is a great place.  Strike up a conversation with the bartender, they are very friendly!  They can give you lots of information about the area.

The Craggy Range also some of the friendliest staff in town.  The manager Jeff, will remember your face, and always greet you if he sees you.  The servers will also remember a face, and are always friendly and try to please.  Say hi to Sara for me if you visit!

The Craggy Range is also kid friendly.  The hostess will give your children crayons and coloring paper, and there is a kids menu and yummy ice cream kids dessert included.

The Craggy Range also has awesome bathroom sinks.  Yes, this is important.  I cannot tell you how many times I received compliments on these sinks while I worked there.  So check them out while you are there!  They look like large copper troughs.

There are fun weekly events.  $5 dollar Margarita Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, Wednesday Open Mic, during the summer one night a week they have salsa dancing, Friday and Saturday nights live music… This is just to name a few.  They attract quite the crowd.  So if you are looking for these kinds of things, the Craggy Range is your place!

Last but not least, and probably most importantly, the Craggy Range has an awesome menu.  The menu has a southwestern flair to it.  From the Southern Slope to the Southwest Chicken Rolls (my personal favorite!) to the Southern Range burger…all containing tortilla strips, which I love.  I adore the Black ‘n Bleu salad, with blackened prime rib bites and bleu cheese.  They have the best burgers in Whitefish.  I love the Bleu Onion BBQ burger, covered in french fried onions….delicious.  You can also build your own burger with a large variety of topping choices.

You can also substitute sweet potato fries instead of regular fries for a $1 upcharge….I would recommend this!!  The Craggy Range was the first restaurant I have ever seen who served maple syrup as a dipping sauce to go with sweet potato fries.  Yes, maple syrup with your dinner sounds weird, but give it a try.  It is good.  If you don’t like it, you can always have bleu cheese or ranch dressing.

They also have a selection of fish and steaks, and dessert to top it off.  They have fun drink items from the jalapeño margarita, raspberry chocolatini, to wonderful bottles of wine.

Their full menu is here: http://www.thecraggyrange.com/menus/

Address: 10 Central Avenue, across from the Tupelo Grille.  It seems that the sign does not stand out, because when I worked there, I would receive a lot of calls from people who could not find it.

I can go on and on about the wonderful place this is.  If you are driving through Whitefish, even if you only have time for lunch, stop by and have a quick bite at the Craggy Range Bar and Grill.

Warmest Wishes from Big Sky Country,

Alex M. Neill
