The Top of the World Resort along the Beartooth Highway in Montana
The Top of the World Resort along the Beartooth Highway is a very important stop, as it is the only store along the Beartooth Highway.
This store sits at 9,400 feet elevation, located 25 miles from Cooke City, Montana, and 38 miles from Red Lodge, Montana. The resort is accessible from the Friday before Memorial Day to the Tuesday after Columbus Day. It has been in its present locale since the 1960’s. The store is surrounded by the Shoshone National Forest, making it easily accessible to a range of outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, fishing, and camping.
The store is open from Monday-Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Any other time of the year, hours will vary, so you may want to EMAIL ahead of time! Yes, I said email. They can be contacted at: firstname.lastname@example.org. They do not want people calling for information about such things as the weather.
Here is the link for lodging information: http://www.topoftheworldresort.com/lodging_1.htm. I would highly recommend reserving a room in advance if you want to stay in the hotel, because there are only 4 rooms. Yes, only FOUR ROOMS.
Plus, they decrease rates with reservations ahead of time. I would contact them for the current rates, as it seems that they often change, depending on the season. There is no fridge in the rooms, but there are small kitchenettes. Because the resort uses alternative power, they also do not allow microwaves or small appliances (such as coffee pots) in the room. If you have questions, or would like to bring something in particular, I would ask ahead of time.
Also, if you do make a reservation, make sure that you do not plan on cancelling.
They have a NO REFUND policy.
Pets are a one-time fee of $5.00, no matter how many nights you stay.
There is also camping available for $24/ night.
I would recommend, even if you do not stay at the resort, that you do make use of their rentals.
You can find their rental rates on their website here. Renting from them will save you from having to bring your own equipment, and nearby Island Lake is spectacular for canoeing or paddle boats. They even have fishing equipment, mountain bikes, and 4 wheelers for rent. I haven’t been there in the winter, but I imagine that snowmobiling is absolutely spectacular with those views.

Please stay tuned for future blogs once we stay at the Top of the World Resort.
*Note: This resort is actually in Wyoming. However, the Beartooth Highway begins in Montana and ends in Montana, and is one of the top things I would recommend to do in Montana, therefore, I have included the Resort on this blog.
Warmest wishes from Big Sky Country,
