When does the Going-to-the-Sun Highway open and close in 2014?

Parts of the Going-to-the-Sun Highway in Glacier National Park in Montana are open year-round to vehicles, but in my opinion the best time to visit is when you can drive the entire length (50 miles) over Logan Pass and experience all that Glacier Park has to offer.

Unfortunately, due to the high levels of snow, the road is not cleared of snow until late June at the earliest each year.  Therefore, you should check before you arrive to see if the highway is completely open, or plan on visiting starting in the middle of July to ensure vehicle access.

Watching the snow plows progress over this incredible highway is one of my favorite things.  Click here to see the Glacier Park Service stunning photos of their road plowing progress.

As of June 25, 2014, the Going-to-the-Sun Highway had not completely opened over Logan Pass for the summer.

Recent storms in northwest Montana created a bit of a setback in removing the snow from the highway for this summer.  Hopefully it will not be much longer before the entire length is able to be accessed via vehicle.

When does the Going-to-the-Sun Highway close for the entire length in 2014?  Here are the dates you need to know:

  • September 21, 2014 – The last day to drive the entire 50 miles.
  • September 22, 2014 – A section of the road will close to vehicle traffic to accommodate accelerated road rehabilitation. You will still be able to drive to Logan Pass from the West Entrance. The Going-to-the-Sun Road will be closed bewteen St. Mary Campground and Logan Pass.
  • October 19, 2014 – The last day to drive to Logan Pass from the West Entrance.
  • October 20, 2014 – The alpine section of the road will be inaccessible to vehicles.

The fall is an incredibly beautiful time of year to visit Glacier National Park, so keep in mind that even though the entire length of the Going-to-the-Sun Road will close on September 21, you will still be able to drive all of the way up to Logan Pass from the West Entrance until October 19, 2014.  (This is my favorite part of the drive anyway!)
