Is the fall a good time to visit Montana and Glacier National Park?

When is the best time to visit the state of Montana? You are probably wondering whether the fall is a good time to visit?

Montana is a beautiful place year-round.  Deciding what you want to do while you visit Montana will determine when is the best time for you to visit.  Winter of course is the best time if you want to visit if you want to do outdoor snow activities.

If you are looking for warmer weather activities, I would highly recommend visiting in September.

July and August are beautiful months also, but you are more likely to encounter the crowds of tourists during those months.

Top of Logan Pass in Glacier National Park, Montana, in the fallThe summer crowds have died down, the weather is still nice and hot, (see here for monthly September averages for Whitefish), and depending on the year, you may get to see the changing colors as fall sets in.  September 2012 was a very nice month, with very hot days!

Some years are worse than others for forest fires, so that is one thing to watch for as you plan your vacation.  (Click here for current forest fire information.)  Forest fires can also be bad in the earlier summer months though, depending on the year, so try not to let that affect your decision on when to visit the state too much.
